If used properly, these oils below will give you luminous skin!
1. Jojoba Oil
Best for: General dry skin
While technically a wax, jojoba (pronounced ho-HO-ba) oil has a chemical structure that's very similar to our skin's natural oils, so it's easily absorbed. Dermatologists recommend it because it also contains such minerals as zinc and copper, and vitamins B and E, which help strengthen the skin.
My experience: Jojoba oil is my personal main choice for oil cleansing (my skin tends to be dry). Jojoba most closely resembles your skin’s natural sebum, so it’s a great skin conditioner and works well for combatting acne since it regulates skin’s own sebum production. It can be great for modulating oily skin. It’s rich in vitamins A and E and is a great anti-inflammatory agent for acne-prone or irritated skin. Also great for hair and scalp.
2. Olive Oil
Best for: Very dry skin
Olive oil — particularly extra-virgin olive oil — is a good all-around natural moisturizer and is recommended for dehydrated skin. It's super rich in fatty acids and vitamin E. Like jojoba oil, olive oil is similar to the oils naturally produced by our skin and so is absorbed well into the skin. It typically does not cause allergies, but because it's a heavier oil, those with acne should avoid using it on their face. Studies also show that the antioxidant content in olive oil may help protect against skin cancer.
My experience: The ability to get absorbed quickly and being gentle on skin make it used as a natural moisturizer. It contains high percentage of unsaturated fats and Vitamins A and E. These are key elements suitable for healing a dry skin on face and also getting rid of sun poisoning on face. Therefore you can never go wrong with this natural oil if you are planning to replenish and sooth your skin. For making your nails glitter strong and healthy, this oil is all you need.
3. Avocado Oil
Best for: Dry, sensitive, or irritated skin
This oil is high in vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids, which helps proper cell function and decrease inflammation. Because it's such a rich emollient, avocado oil is ideal for those with dry, itchy, or aging skin.
My experience: Avocado oil is super rich in skin softening monounsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. Good for soothing itchy, sunburned skin and eczema. I use it as a whole body conditioning oil. Also good for oil cleansing for dry skin. Great for hair also.
4. Argan Oil
Best for: Fine lines, dry skin, and dry hair
Argan oil is surrounded by more hype than U2's new album — and the consensus is that the hype is justified (for both). Extracted from the kernels found in the fruit of Moroccan argan trees, argan oil has high levels of vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants. While it first claimed fame as a savior for dry, damaged hair, the oil also works wonders on the face and body. The fatty acids help our skin cells make healthy membranes, reduce inflammation, and promote healthy collagen.
Argan oil is another that’s rich in antioxidants and fatty acids. It’s a great moisturizer and anti-inflammatory. Improves skin elasticity, making it great for stretch marks. This is another great one to add to a carrier oil for all body moisturizing. I use it for my dry hair– just work a few drops in the ends of dry hair.
5. Coconut Oil
Best for: Sensitive skin, eczema, dry hair
If you have a super-sensitive skin, I recommend coconut oil, straight from the grocery store, as a body moisturizer. And its fatty acids make it helpful for anyone with eczema, too.
Additionally, research has shown that coconut oil restores dry hair. Its 12-carbon fatty acid structure allows it to penetrate the hair cuticle and help provide flexibility and strength. Rub a small amount on dry ends, smooth a bit on your fingers to tame flyaways, or use it as a deep-conditioning treatment in the shower.
My experience: Coconut oil is of course the stuff of miracles for skin and hair. Coconut oil is naturally antibacterial and anti-fungal, making it another great oil for oil cleansing and regulating the skin’s microbiome. A saturated fat, it’s especially thick but absorbs quickly. I use coconut oil as a base for my miracle skin butter and use it most often in the drier winter months. It’s also a great wrinkle preventer and leaves skin looking very dewy. Also works great as a makeup remover.
6. Lavender Oil
Best for: Acne-prone or irritated skin
Collected from the fresh flowering tops of lavender, lavender oil may be especially beneficial for those with acne and general skin irritation. It helps control sebum production, soothes irritation, and is a natural antiseptic and disinfectant. Lavender oil can also boost the performance of your other skin products. It's thought to help aid in the absorption of active ingredients into the skin.
My experience: Lavender oil is one of those few natural ingredients you can look up to for getting rid of acne troubles. The oil has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that can fight the bacteria that cause acne and inflammation. Simply dab some lavender oil on your acne blemishes using a cotton swab, and see the desired results.
7. Rose Hip Seed Oil
Best for: Uneven pigment, scars, fine lines, and acne-prone skin
Rose hip seed oil, which is extracted from the seeds of a South American rosebush, is like Mother Nature's Retin-A without the irritating side effects. It contains omega-6 essential fatty acids and vitamins A and C, which work to increase cell turnover. If you use it for a few weeks, you'll notice significant change in any dark spots, scars, or any other skin discoloration.
This retinol-like effect, and the resulting increase in collagen and elastin production, means aging skin will benefit from rose hip seed oil, too. Its high concentrations of linoleic acid may also help acneic skin.
My experience: Rose hip oil is high in vitamin C, one of the most important skin antioxidants, so it’s great to combat aging skin. I LOVE rose hip oil and use it daily. I also use it as part of my combination formulas (see below). It makes skin incredibly soft and dewy and erases fine lines, prevents wrinkles, reduces scars, and fades dark spots. I use this brand— it’s very affordable! If you have dry skin especially, this oil is for you for daily use.
